With And Without You
A tribute to Jacob Aue Sobol's father, who died when the photographer was twenty and never saw the two decades of work that followed.
With And Without You brings together 129 images spanning Sobol's career: highlights from published projects including Sabine, Arrivals and Departures, By the River of Kings and I, Tokyo, set alongside pictures from the then-unpublished bodies of work Home, Road of Bones and America. The 224-page hardcover, published by Super Labo with text in English and Danish, functions less as a chronological survey than as a private reckoning conducted in public, gathering the images his father never got to see into a single volume.
Sobol, a Danish photographer and Magnum member, has built his career on close, physically immersive relationships with the people and places he photographs, from a Greenlandic fishing village in Sabine to Tokyo, Bangkok and rural Russia in later projects. With And Without You reframes that body of work around the personal loss that runs beneath it.
