Figur I, Figur II

Figur I, Figur II collects two related series of black-and-white portraits: in Figur I, a young woman is photographed against a neutral background in a shifting range of poses and clothing that resist a fixed reading of gender; in Figur II, a second figure stands before a lamella curtain trying on a tube cowl, subject to the same ambiguity. Steinbach draws on the gestural vocabulary of fashion photography, repeatedly undercutting it to strip away the roles it typically assigns its subjects. The book, designed by Steinbach with HIT and published by Spector Books in Leipzig, accompanied an exhibition at the Sprengel Museum Hannover, on view June 9 through October 25, 2015. Spector Books also issued limited-edition signed prints from the two series alongside the book.
