Not Fully Human, Not Human at All

by Bettina Steinbrügge, Émilie Villez
Archive Books · 2021 · Paperback

The catalogue of a three-year curatorial project, initiated by Kadist, on dehumanization in Europe and what the project calls re-humanization.

The title comes from Donna Haraway's essay "Ecce Homo, Ain't (Ar'n't) I a Woman, and Inappropriate/d Others", which questions the universal claims of Enlightenment humanism. The book was published for exhibitions at Kunstverein in Hamburg (24 October 2020 to 7 February 2021) and Kadist, Paris (20 May to 11 July 2021). It collects contributions from artists, curators and theorists, including Saddie Choua, Daniela Ortiz, Lala Rašćić, Nora Sternfeld and Zairong Xiang. It is in English and German, with design by Charlotte Rohde. It was published by Archive Books with the Akademie der Künste der Welt, Cologne.

It is edited by Bettina Steinbrügge of Kunstverein in Hamburg and Émilie Villez of Kadist. Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez, who curated the project, is credited as managing editor with Nicholas Tammens. Kadist is a contemporary arts organization that runs residencies, exhibitions and publications.
