Les Nuits De
Les Nuits de Place Blanche gathers Christer Strömholm's photographs of the transgender community around Place Blanche, in the Pigalle district of Paris, made across the 1950s and 1960s.
Strömholm photographed his subjects in the street and in the hotel rooms where they lived, working in close, informal proximity. He described the series as being about the freedom to choose one's own life and identity, and the pictures have come to stand as records of both fragility and resilience. This hardcover edition runs 48 pages at 14.5 by 21 cm, with quadrilingual text in English, Spanish, Catalan, and French. It was co-published by RM and the Foto Colectania Foundation for the exhibition The Temptation to Exist: Christer Strömholm | Anders Petersen, shown at Foto Colectania in Barcelona from April to July 2015.
Strömholm is described by his publisher as the father of Swedish contemporary photography. His estate's archive extends well beyond Place Blanche, spanning street photography and portraiture made in Paris, Spain, Japan, and the United States, alongside later Polaroid and color work.
