Forest Hills tracks the twentieth-century rise and fall of tennis at Forest Hills, Queens. Bill Sullivan built the book from photographs and constructed images of the site: its aerial views, court markings, and stadium fabric.
The book pairs documentary and altered imagery. Aerial photographs of the West Side Tennis Club's horseshoe-shaped stadium, its clay and grass courts changing texture across decades, sit alongside composited and reworked views that blur record and invention. Forest Hills was once the center of tennis in America; the book reads it as a place that fell out of use. Its history is tracked through the surfaces and signage that marked its successive eras, not through a straight chronology. This second edition, of 1,000 copies, was published by S U N, New York, in 2023 to mark the stadium's hundredth anniversary. It was printed on 170gsm Arena ivory stock by Die Keure in Bruges. A first edition of 500 copies came earlier, issued by S U N Books & Editions in 2013-14 and bound in striped cloth with no printed title on the cover.
Sullivan made the book's concept and design with Ofer Wolberger. Sullivan publishes his own work through S U N. Forest Hills is his study of a single site, the former U.S. Open grounds, read as a record of how tennis, architecture, and design changed together over a century.
Notes
Booksellers spell the publisher variously: "S U N", "SUN", "S_U_N_", "S U N Books & Editions", "s u n editions". These all name the same New York imprint that publishes Sullivan's own work. Canonical spelling used here is "S U N".
This record catalogs the 2023 second edition. ISBN 9798218957032, 144pp, 1,000 copies, printed by Die Keure in Bruges. It was issued for the stadium's centenary. An earlier first edition is not the edition catalogued here: ISBN 9780984978137, 500 copies, S U N Books & Editions, 2013-14, cloth binding in two colorways with no printed title, about 9.5 x 7 in per dealer listings.
The cover image is a bookseller's photograph of the actual 2023 edition, from the Bookish Kemper listing on AbeBooks. It shows the true front cover, not a publisher hero shot.
Two independent editions of the same title, author, and subject turned up on AbeBooks and OpenLibrary, which rules out any other person named Bill Sullivan. The subject matter (West Side Tennis Club / Forest Hills Stadium, Queens) and the photography-based, image-making approach match the contemporary New York artist named in the research brief, not the unrelated academic of the same name.
No official site, gallery page, or Wikipedia entry was found this session for this Bill Sullivan. So no biographical claims beyond the book's own publication facts are included here.
