Contemporary Suburbium

by Ed Templeton
Um Yeah Arts · 2017 · Hardcover, two-volume set in slipcase

Contemporary Suburbium is a two-volume boxed set in which Ed Templeton and Deanna Templeton each present a separate photographic volume of Southern California suburban life, issued together in a shared slipcase.

Rather than a single co-authored sequence, the set gives each photographer their own book: Ed Templeton's volume works from his documentation of skateboarding, youth culture and the built suburban landscape of Orange County, while Deanna Templeton contributes her own parallel record of the same milieu, seen from a different vantage. Housed together, the two volumes read as complementary studies of one place and one community, shaped by a married couple who have spent decades photographing it from inside.

Ed Templeton is a photographer and professional skateboarder whose books, including Teenage Smokers and The Seconds Pass, document skate and suburban youth culture from within; Deanna Templeton's own photography, including The Swimming Pool and What She Said, focuses on adolescence, girlhood and Southern California life. Contemporary Suburbium brings their distinct bodies of work together under one shared title.
