Wawrzyniec Tokarski

Wawrzyniec Tokarski is the Hatje Cantz catalogue for the painter’s solo exhibition at the Saarlandmuseum in Saarbrücken, held at the Moderne Galerie from May 19 to July 15, 2007.

The softcover has 204 pages and 114 images, with texts in German, English and French. Ralph Melcher edited it, and the contributors are Christian Rattemeyer, Melcher, Christoph Blase and Cay Sophie Rabinowitz. Tokarski’s paintings mix text with symbols taken from heraldry and advertising. The publisher describes them as satire aimed at environmental destruction, consumerism and the superficiality of the media.

Tokarski was born in 1968 in Gdansk. According to his gallery’s biography, he studied at the art academies in Gdansk, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe between 1986 and 1997.
