5 Dollars for 3 Minutes
In the early 1990s Cammie Toloui worked as a stripper in a San Francisco peep-show booth to pay for her photojournalism degree, and photographed the men who paid to watch her, offering them a discount if they agreed to be pictured.
5 Dollars for 3 Minutes collects that body of work, made behind the booth glass over roughly two years and published here for the first time. The pictures show customers masturbating, watching, and posing, a broad range of fetishes, ages, and body types rendered without the moralizing or prurience typical of the genre. Void published the first edition in 2021 as a small-format hardback; it went to a second printing shortly after release.
Toloui later became a working photojournalist, and the project's frank inversion of the male gaze, made from inside the transaction rather than as an outside observer, has been reassessed since its rediscovery and publication as an early, unusually direct document of sex work from a sex worker's own camera.
