TTP
TTP is the first book by the photographer Hayahisa Tomiyasu. It follows one ping pong table in a Leipzig park over five years, always from the same window.
Tomiyasu shot the table from the eighth-floor window of his former student apartment, facing south. The framing barely moves. What changes is the light, the season and who turns up. The title abbreviates tischtennisplatte, the German word for a table tennis table. The table serves as a sun bed, a laundry counter, a skate obstacle, a climbing frame, a lunch spot and a refuge from the street. It is put to nearly every use except table tennis. The pictures are deadpan and patient, and the book becomes a record of the habits of the people who pass through.
MACK published it in 2018 as the winner of the MACK First Book Award, a 260-page paperback measuring 20 x 27 cm. It was also shortlisted for the 44th Ihei Kimura Prize.
