Rockocó: imágenes del pop-rock madrileño en los 80

Rockocó collects the photocopied fanzine Miguel Trillo self-published from a market stall in Madrid in the early 1980s, a firsthand record of the city's post-Franco youth subcultures shot from inside the crowd rather than at a critical distance.

This 2017 La Fonoteca edition reprints all six original issues in facsimile — devoted in turn to mods, punks, technopop and Movida scenesters, rockers and teddy boys, and heavy metal fans — alongside a new seventh issue gathering Trillo's portraits of young Madrid musicians made between 2000 and 2016. Photocopied, stapled and sold by hand at concerts and record fairs, the originals worked as much as flyers as photobooks; the reprint preserves their scrappy, homemade format as a set of separate booklets rather than smoothing them into one bound volume.

Trillo has spent four decades photographing Spanish youth culture from the movida madrileña onward, and Rockocó sits alongside his better-known monographs, including La Primera Movida, as primary-source documentation of a scene he photographed as a participant rather than an outside observer.
