Fear of Disappearance
Akina Factory
· 2015
· Zine (softcover)
Fear of Disappearance began as Mariya Ustymenko's exploration of one's connection to a particular space, developed during a 2015 Arts Council-funded residency with bookRoom under the guidance of Akina in London. Working across black-and-white and color photography, Ustymenko photographed in the streets of London to examine how identity is shaped and eroded by continuous urban change and redevelopment. The zine edition, sequenced and printed by Akina Factory, presents 31 images across 52 pages in a soft cover of laminated Pergamenata Fedrigoni paper, issued in a hand-numbered edition of 100. The project also produced a companion artist-book edition and a standalone sculptural object in concrete, steel, and laser-engraved perspex, extending the work's interest in permanence and disappearance into physical, architectural materials.
