Between Screens
Olivier van Breugel and Simone Mudde photographed visitors to the Rijksmuseum's Gallery of Honour as they looked at Rembrandt's Night Watch through the screens of phones, cameras and tablets.
The pictures are close-ups of raised hands holding devices, each with the painting on its display. The series was made in 2014 for the exhibition On the Move at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the publication was developed with the designers Kummer & Herrman as its presentation form. It consists of four loose cross-folded sheets in a soft cover, and the sheets fold out and join into a single poster of about 188 × 125 cm. The text is in English and Dutch. Nicole Montagne, whose earlier essay prompted the project, wrote a new essay for it on what a museum visitor's photograph records. The edition was issued with three different covers, 300 numbered copies of each. It won the silver medal for artistic catalogue at the European Design Awards.
Van Breugel graduated from AKV|St.Joost in Breda in 2011 and has worked with Mudde since McHotel (2012). The two founded Not Another Publisher in 2014 to issue their books. The Stedelijk Museum acquired Between Screens and McHotel for its collection in 2015. Copies are held by the MoMA Library, the Yale art library and the New York Public Library.
