Exquisite Errors: Diagnostic Manual of Codec Orders (DMCO-I)
A diagnostic manual for digital glitches, in which the Dutch artist Barry van der Rijt classifies codec errors the way psychiatry classifies mental disorders.
Over two years van der Rijt produced and catalogued more than 300 distorted images, each a codec order with its own entry. The classification follows the model of the DSM, with one reversal: every order is labelled positively rather than as a defect. The book has a foreword by Trudy Dehue, was designed by Rob van Hoesel and Carel Fransen, and runs to 288 pages in an Otastar softcover. The first edition was 500 copies.
Van der Rijt was diagnosed with ADHD about a decade before the book appeared, and the project treats his own diagnosis as a reason to look at deviation as something to describe rather than correct. The Eriskay Connection of Breda published it in 2015.
