Home Is Where the Dog Is
A black-and-white photobook of one household, its garden and its animals, made by Erik van der Weijde with an iPhone and published by his own imprint 4478zine in 2014.
Four white walls enclose a tropical garden and set the limits of the view. Within them appear bathing cousins, a posing wife, the undisturbed dog, a dead rat, a playing son, a smoking mother-in-law and a stoic cat. The pictures were taken in the first hours of dusk over almost two years. The book tests where the private ends and the public begins. It is a sewn softcover of 160 pages, offset printed in the Netherlands, 19 x 25 cm, in an edition of 600 copies. The title is set in large capitals on the front cover over a dark, blurred photograph.
Van der Weijde runs 4478zine, the imprint that publishes his printed matter. It continues the domestic inquiry of his earlier This is not my Wife and This is not my Son. Privacy Settings (2013) preceded it.
