Hide

by Jason Vaughn
Trema Förlag · 2015 · Hardcover
Hide is Jason Vaughn's first monograph, a photographic typology of deer stands built by hunters across Wisconsin, the state he adopted as his home. Inspired by conversations with hunters who described their stands as structures meant to be passed down to the next generation, Vaughn began the project while anticipating the birth of his own son. The work took on additional weight when Vaughn was diagnosed with leukemia in 2011, at age 32, with a three-month-old at home; the deer stands came to stand less for hunting and death than for permanence, inheritance, and time spent in nature with family. Published by Trema Förlag (Stockholm) in 2015 in a first edition of 400 numbered hardcover copies with 40 four-color plates, the book also appeared in a limited boxset edition with two signed prints, produced in partnership with TBW Books. Vaughn writes: 'hide became my reflection on legacies and family, my homage to the state that has become my home, and a narrative about accepting change.'
