Made Glorious Summer

Made Glorious Summer takes its title from the opening line of Shakespeare's Richard III — "Now is the winter of our discontent / Made glorious summer" — and gathers a body of Nick Waplington's photographs under that note of uneasy seasonal turn.

Published by the Tokyo imprint Powershovel Books in a numbered edition of 500, the paperback continues Waplington's long-running documentary interest in everyday English life; its cover image, a lone hooded figure walking a coastal path at dusk past a wind-bent tree, sets the book's tone of solitary, overcast English landscape rather than the crowd scenes of his earlier work.

Waplington (born London, 1965) first drew wide attention with Living Room (1991), an intimate document of a working-class Nottingham family's daily life, and has since moved between documentary photography, fashion collaborations (including work with designer Alexander McQueen), and small-press editions; Made Glorious Summer belongs to the run of independently published, Japan-printed books through which much of his later photography has appeared.
