Photography Is the Medium of Desire: An International Anthology of Photography and Video
Photography Is the Medium of Desire catalogues a 2015-16 exhibition on desire in photography and video at the Leslie-Lohman Museum.
Organized by Peter Weiermair, the show ran from December 18, 2015 to March 16, 2016 in New York. Fourteen artists took part, from China, Japan, Greece, Russia, Italy, Germany, Great Britain and the US. They include Anthony Gayton, Greg Gorman, Alexander Kargaltsev, Tomoko Kikuchi, Joseph Maida, Matthew Morrocco, Ohm Phanphiroj, Ren Hang, Daniel M. Schmude, Jessica Yatrofsky and Dimitris Yeros. The press text framed desire, Eros and sexuality as a way to show that cultural differences of nation, sexual orientation or gender identity can be both wide and familiar. The catalogue runs to 113 pages, chiefly in color.
Weiermair is a freelance curator based in Innsbruck, Austria, and sits on the board of the Leslie-Lohman Museum. Hyperallergic reviewed the exhibition critically, finding its treatment of desire sparse and reliant on cliché.
