Between Maple and Chestnut
Between Maple and Chestnut is Terri Weifenbach's book on a single suburban neighborhood, photographed as an "anywhere America" of mature trees, green lawns and street names repeated from town to town.
The pictures were made between 2005 and 2007. Weifenbach has described getting lost one day in a contained neighborhood of modest brick homes, built for WWII veterans and their families, with a park at its center and streets named Elm, Maple and Chestnut, and returning repeatedly over two years to photograph it. She works in color with selective focus and a narrow depth of field, aiming for a place between painting and photography. Nazraeli Press published the book in Portland in 2012 as a 56-page hardcover bound in Japanese cloth, limited to 1,000 casebound copies, with a special edition also offered.
Weifenbach was born in New York City, grew up in Washington, D.C., and lives in Paris. Her first monograph, In Your Dreams (Nazraeli, 1997), is included in Parr and Badger's The Photobook: A History, and she received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2015.
