Peer to Peer

Peer to Peer is Hannah Whitaker's study of how photographs can behave like a network, iterating and cross-referencing one another rather than standing as single, isolated images.

The book alternates a full-page photograph with a following spread of up to four smaller images that relate back to it, using repeated marks made through in-camera masking to give the sequence a linear, almost textual logic. The cover spells out the book's title and author in an invented, illegible alphabet, inverting the photographs' own logic by asking to be looked at rather than read. Published by MOREL Books in London in 2015 as a 100-page hardcover in an edition of 1000, it includes an accompanying text insert by the poet Aaron Kunin.

Whitaker, a Brooklyn-based photographer known for constructed, in-camera studio work that treats the photographic apparatus itself as subject matter, has exhibited widely and published with MOREL Books and other independent presses; Peer to Peer is among her more systematic explorations of photographic seriality.
