The Man in the Crowd: The Uneasy Streets of Garry Winogrand
The Man in the Crowd: The Uneasy Streets of Garry Winogrand gathers three and a half decades of Garry Winogrand's street photography. The curator John Szarkowski called Winogrand the central photographer of his generation, a claim this book was assembled to support.
Published by Fraenkel Gallery with D.A.P. in 1999, the book concentrates on the candid street pictures Winogrand returned to throughout his career. It reproduces 107 photographs as duotone plates, fewer than half of them published before, with an introduction by Fran Lebowitz and an essay by Ben Lifson.
Winogrand treated the street as a stage where ordinary encounters played out as small dramas. The monograph reads his decades of unposed crowd and street scenes as one sustained body of work rather than a series of separate pictures.
