Brush Fires in the Social Landscape

A seminal work begun in collaboration with David Wojnarowicz before his death in 1992 from AIDS-related complications. This monograph demonstrates Wojnarowicz's extraordinary use of photography, often done in conjunction with writing or painting, to address the AIDS crisis and issues of censorship and homophobia. The work includes contributions from artist and writer friends including Lucy R. Lippard, Nan Goldin, Karen Finley, Kiki Smith, and others, to David Cole, the lawyer who represented him in his case against Donald Wildmon and the American Family Association. Published as Aperture 137, this book captures Wojnarowicz's fierce engagement with political and social issues through his multimedia artistic practice.
