Dimension of Vision

Dimension of Vision is Toshitsugu Yamawaki's first photobook, a 120-page collection built from roughly 2,000 images the artist shot between 2008 and 2011.

The book compiles 109 photographs, reworked in the months after the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, into three episodes: "Abstract," high-contrast black-and-white images of water surfaces and sparks; "Translation," color photographs made near U.S. military bases in Fussa and Yokosuka, Japan, as well as in New York and Barcelona; and "Calm," closing with a single black-and-white photograph of the sea, taken in Ibaraki on March 11, 2011. Yamawaki has described the title's sense of "dimension" as a return to first principles of how an image is read, stripping elements back to draw out latent meaning. Self-published through his own Studio A La Page, Tokyo, in 2011, softbound, with variant covers printed by the photographer; text in Japanese.

Yamawaki, born in Tokyo in 1956, worked as an advertising art director before founding Studio A La Page and turning to photography around 2000. His later book Dual I & II (2013) won second prize at the Kassel PHOTOBOOKFESTIVAL Photobook Award.
