Administrative Stationery

Foolscap Mk II — the British administrative sheet, 203 × 330 mm, with Japanese detailing. One mark system applied identically across every piece in the family. Every piece is drawn in millimetres and shown at actual size, on screen and on paper: calibrate the screen against a bank card using the controls below, or switch to fit to screen to see the whole family at once. Only the two swatches captioned enlarged are off scale.

Printing this page produces the artwork itself: one piece per page, each page at its trim size, with no tint, no furniture and no bleed. Chrome, Edge and Firefox set the page sizes from the file; Safari prints each piece at true size on the paper chosen in the print dialog, where the pad needs Legal (216 × 356 mm).

The mark is a shelf of four spines, one leaning, in a ruled square, stamped in dark green #034706. Every piece uses it, at three fixed sizes and never a fourth. Everything else on the sheet prints black.

Rules

Square, ruled at 5.8% of its own width, so the frame scales with the mark.
Always #034706 — the same green on press and on screen. There is no print-only variant. Never a third colour. The black drawing is used only when the whole job prints in black alone.
Never smaller than 7 mm — the leaning spine closes up below that.
Clear space on all sides equal to one spine width.
The seal never sits inside a rule, box, or panel other than its own.

The family — Foolscap Mk II

Six pieces, all carrying the same seal at its specified size. The head sheet is a pad — glued at the head, 50 sheets on a chipboard back — and it is not a plain letterhead: it is the accession record. It runs in the order the work is actually done: volume (the book as it is in hand, with the issue points ticked), accession (the transaction), condition on the antiquarian trade grades, then notes. Fields are set on a twelve-column grid and sized to their content, so the length of the rule tells you what is expected on it — a date is eight characters wide, a title runs the full measure. What the design takes from Japanese stationery is restraint and a stamp: the boxed seal, the stacked wordmark, a 34 mm hairline in place of the full-width rule, confined ruling instead of ruling that bleeds across the page, and the form reference set vertically in the left margin.

One bookmark, not five. The collection is ticked by hand rather than printed, so the bookmark is one item printed one way, and adding a collection to the library never makes the stock in the drawer obsolete. It also puts the bookmark in the same idiom as everything else in the family: a form you fill in.

Every copy is identical. The collection is written on by hand, not printed, so there is one version of this item and reprints run from the same artwork file. A new collection is entered on the Other rule.
Imposition: 5 up on A4 (210 × 297 mm), or 10 up on SRA3 (320 × 450 mm).
Cutting: straight guillotine cuts on all four edges. Nothing on this item is die-cut.
Grain direction: the grain must run parallel to the 210 mm dimension, so the bookmark lies flat between the pages of a book rather than curling.

Release liner glassine or PET, either is acceptable	Two colours, one side only (2/0)	The removable adhesive is a requirement, not a preference — permanent adhesive is not acceptable on collection material, and the label has to still lift years after it went on. Acrylic rather than rubber-based for that reason: a rubber removable builds tack on dwell and its plasticiser stains paper. It must come away from an uncoated endpaper leaving no residue and no lifted fibre. Please name the adhesive on the quote. Cut through the face material only and leave the liner uncut (kiss-cut), corner radius 1.6 mm, 21 up on an A4 liner, 3 across by 7 down. Deliver on sheets, not rolls.

Notes to the printer — whole job

Quantities are given on the order. Please quote each of the six items separately at 250, 500 and 1,000.
Colours: two spot colours across the whole job — black, and one green. There is no four-colour process on any item. The green is drawn at #034706, the same value the mark carries on screen; as a number to mix from, that is L* 25.4 · a* −30.7 · b* +29.8 (D50, 2°). No Pantone number is specified: mix to that target, then send a drawdown on the running stock for approval before the run. Allow for the ink drying back and losing density on uncoated stock when choosing the match, but do not alter the supplied artwork to compensate.
Screens: the job is two inks but it is not all solids. The green prints solid everywhere it appears and is never screened. The black is solid for the mark, the wordmark, section headings and the heavy rules, and is screened at four values and no others — 60 % secondary type (captions, footers, field names, addresses), 50 % tick-circle strokes, 30 % the writing rules that get filled in by hand, and 20 % the ledger ruling and column rules. Nothing is drawn lighter than 20 %. Please quote accordingly: this is a screened two-colour job, not two flat colours.
Rules are 0.25 mm (0.71 pt) throughout, at whichever of the values above the element calls for. There are no hairlines and nothing is set to a device-dependent “thin” weight.
Artwork supplied as PDF/X-4, one file per item, at 100% size — six files, of which 03 and 06 are two pages, face then reverse. Two spot channels only, named Black and HSL Green; no CMYK or RGB objects anywhere in the files. Fonts embedded and subset. Every page carries a TrimBox at the size given above and no BleedBox. Trim marks in registration, 0.25 mm, offset 5 mm. The output intent is CGATS 21 CRPC2, the uncoated characterisation: it describes the printing condition and is not an instruction to convert anything.
No bleed anywhere. Nothing runs off the trim on any item, so a 3 mm trim allowance is sufficient throughout. The closest any ink comes to the trim, measured off the artwork rather than intended: 01 6.2 mm · 02 11.2 mm · 03 11.0 mm · 04 6.0 mm · 06 5.9 mm. The labels (05) are the one exception at 4 mm: six would take a third of a 32 mm label, and the kiss-cut die registers to the printed sheet rather than being cut blind on a guillotine, so the tolerance it has to absorb is smaller.
No coatings, no varnish, no lamination, no foil, no embossing. The uncoated surface has to stay writable — these are forms that get filled in with pen and pencil.
No die-cutting anywhere except the labels (item 05), which are cut through the face material only. Every other item is cut on the guillotine.
Grain long on all items, running parallel to the longer dimension. This matters most on the pad: across the grain, the sheets ripple at the glued head.
Pad build (01): 50 sheets, flexible padding compound at the head, 1.5 mm chipboard back, no tape strip. Knock the stack up square to the head edge before gluing.
Envelopes (03): keep all printing 5 mm clear of the gummed areas and of the flap fold. Print the reverse after the face, allowing for the extra thickness at the flap when setting up. If the envelope you can source will not run the second pass, please say so at quote stage — the reverse is not the part we would drop, the envelope is.
Registration: the green never overprints or butts the black — the two colours meet only as separate elements on the same sheet, so ±0.15 mm is ample. Do not add trapping, spread or choke to the supplied artwork.
If the job is quoted as one colour: the seal prints black and nothing else on any item changes. Do not substitute a tint or screen of black for the green.
Proofs: one wet proof on the running stock for the pad (01) and the bookmark (06), for approval before the run. A laser proof is sufficient for the other four items.
