Pope.L

Pope.L, Will Boone documents a two-artist exhibition at Andrea Rosen Gallery that set William Pope.L's language-based sculpture against Will Boone's paintings of found American imagery, letting each artist's work sharpen the other by contrast.

The show ran January 30 to March 5, 2016, and split the gallery's three rooms between Pope.L's freestanding cut-out sculptures, including Cone in a Forest and Cone for My Sister (Private Language Problem), and Boone's larger paintings built from acrylic, magazine clippings, and resin over impressions of found steel gates. This 68-page softcover booklet, produced by Andrea Rosen Gallery's publishing program, gathers a compilation of source material and images from each artist rather than functioning as a conventional catalog with essays.

Pope.L (1955–2023) spent decades probing race, poverty, and language through performance, sculpture, and painting, including his ongoing Skin Set series. Boone, based in Los Angeles, works between painting and sculpture and draws on Southern American iconography that he later expanded in publications such as Prison Rodeo and Elvis.
