Floatation Tank

Floatation Tank is the debut installment in Giles Cassels's quarterly photobook series, a moody assemblage of American vernacular imagery that fellow photographer Tony Fouhse described as approximating a feeling of the country itself.

Self-published in a signed, numbered edition of 50 with an included print, the 64-page color book was the first of four issues Cassels released one per season through 2015, followed later that year by Nightfall. It combines dark landscapes, roadside clutter, and worn cultural icons into a fragmented sequence, an undertone of dry humor running beneath its otherwise apocalyptic mood.

Cassels is an American photographer whose ongoing quarterly series continued with Nightfall and later issues, distributed through specialist photobook dealers including photo-eye, PhotoBookStore, and Flotsam Books. The project extends a lineage of fragmented, vernacular American road photography while foregrounding the handmade, small-edition nature of the object itself.
