My Freedom

My Freedom is a small, tightly limited artist book from the year Tiane Doan na Champassak's self-publishing was at its most prolific, and it keeps the intimacy of the residency in which it was made.

The photographs were taken during an artist residency in Bangkok. The book runs to 44 pages at 19.5 by 30 cm, with a wraparound colour photograph on the cover and no printed title, and was issued under the artist's own Siam's Guy Books imprint in a first edition of 69 copies, each sold with a C-print. It appeared in 2016 alongside 41.667, Tamarind Ghosts, Hardcore, Palms and Siam's Guy, the last two of which are also in this collection.

Champassak (born 1973) is a French artist of Lao descent whose work turns on sexuality, gender and the body as they pass through photography's filters of anonymity and censorship. He moves between his own pictures and appropriated material from the internet, magazines and personal ephemera, and Thailand has been a recurring site. His books have been published by Mörel, RVB and Éditions Bessard as well as under his own label.
