Stan Douglas
This third volume in the Scotiabank Photography Award series presents the photographic practice of Vancouver artist Stan Douglas, honored as the award's laureate for an established Canadian artist.
The 228-page monograph, published by Steidl in partnership with Scotiabank, surveys how photography has shaped Douglas's critical and historical reception. Douglas restages specific, often overlooked historical moments — sites of civic unrest, forgotten labor disputes, and other populist events — as meticulously constructed large-format tableaux that read simultaneously as documentary record and cinematic fiction. The book traces an uncanny resemblance between these reconstructed histories of displacement and injustice and present-day events, treating photography as both the medium and the subject of Douglas's inquiry into memory and visual culture.
Douglas (b. 1960, Vancouver) works across photography, film, and installation, unraveling official narratives through carefully researched restagings of specific historical events; his photographic series include Abbott & Cordova, 7 August 1971. He later represented Canada at the Venice Biennale (2022) and has had major surveys at museums internationally, with work held in public collections worldwide.
