At Zenith
At Zenith is a book of William Eggleston's photographs of the sky, made with the camera pointed at the sky to follow the clouds rolling by.
Steidl issued it in October 2013 as an 88-page clothbound hardback. The publisher traces it to a 1979 book of fifteen colour photographs, made in an edition of twenty from the second chapter of an unpublished larger work called Wedgewood Blue. Steidl sets it next to the big surveys Chromes and Los Alamos Revisited and calls it a quiet, experimental pause after the loud colour Eggleston is known for.
Eggleston was born in Memphis in 1939 and got his first camera in 1957. He brought dye-transfer printing, a commercial process, into artists' prints, and his 1976 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York was a milestone. The Whitney Museum of American Art gave him a retrospective in 2008 and Haus der Kunst in Munich another in 2009.
