Sketch of Paris

by JH Engstrom
Aperture · 2013

Sketch of Paris gathers more than 250 photographs JH Engström made in Paris between 1991 and 2012, in a city where he first lived as a ten-year-old.

Engström writes that he moved with his parents from Värmland to Paris in 1979 and returned to Sweden two years later. Paris has been a second home since, and he has visited and lived there off and on. The book mixes self-portraits, nudes, portraits of lovers, friends and strangers, and the occasional street scene, made in the city's streets, bars and artists' lofts. Aperture's description places it closer to Nan Goldin and Anders Petersen than to Atget or Henri Cartier-Bresson. Aperture published the 314-page paperback in 2013.

Engström was born in Karlstad, Sweden, in 1969. He assisted Mario Testino in Paris and Anders Petersen in Stockholm, and graduated from the University of Gothenburg in 1997. His earlier books include Trying to Dance (2004), Haunts (2006), CDG/JHE (2008), From Back Home (with Anders Petersen, 2009) and La Résidence (2009). Trying to Dance was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in 2005.
