Covert to Overt: The Under/Overground Art of Shepard Fairey
A monograph on the American street artist and graphic designer Shepard Fairey (b. 1970) covering 2010 to 2015, the years in which the author of the OBEY Giant campaign moved from paper onto murals, installations and cross-cultural collaborations.
Published by Rizzoli in 2015, the book is organised year by year, each section opened by a text from Fairey or a collaborator, among them the curator Pedro Alonzo, Russell Brand, D*Face, the photographer Dennis Morris, Sean Bonner and Mark Sloan of the Halsey Institute. It documents large-scale murals on several continents, mixed-media installations, silkscreens and music-and-art events, alongside work for the OBEY clothing line, much of it previously unpublished. The cover reproduces the Andre the Giant face that Fairey first stickered as a Rhode Island School of Design student in 1989.
Fairey's 2008 Hope poster for Barack Obama brought him wide public recognition; his work is held by the Smithsonian, LACMA, MoMA and the V&A. Covert to Overt follows Supply and Demand, the 2006 Gingko Press survey of his first two decades, and was edited by Simon Steinhardt.
