Obey: Supply & Demand: The Art of Shepard Fairey, 20th Anniversary Edition

by Shepard Fairey
Gingko Press · 2009 · Hardcover

The expanded 20th-anniversary edition of Supply & Demand, the survey of Shepard Fairey's work from the first OBEY Giant sticker in 1989 to the Obama Hope poster, published with Obey Giant to coincide with his 2009 retrospective at the ICA Boston.

The volume adds 100 pages of illustrations and text to the 2006 first edition, bringing the record of the OBEY street campaign, Fairey's design practice and his gallery exhibitions up to the 2008 presidential campaign. It reproduces versions of the Obama image alongside the letter from the President-elect thanking Fairey for his support. Essays by Carlo McCormick, Steven Heller, Henry Rollins, Rob Walker and Roger Gastman frame the work in relation to propaganda, punk and skate graphics and contemporary art. The book is bound in black boards embossed in silver with a cloth spine, and was issued with a folded poster; 780 colour illustrations.

Fairey (b. 1970) started the Andre the Giant Has a Posse sticker as a Rhode Island School of Design student; the campaign became the OBEY Giant project and, by 2009, a body of screen-prints, stencils and murals shown in museums. This is the reference volume for the first two decades, later followed by the exhibition books E Pluribus Venom and Mayday.
