Peter Fischli David Weiss
Peter Fischli David Weiss is a 2014 survey of the Swiss artist duo's work drawn entirely from the Glenstone Foundation's collection, spanning 1979 to 2012.
Published by Glenstone and edited by Emily Wei Rales and Ali Nemerov, the 256-page book reproduces rubber and clay sculptures, the photographic series Equilibres (A Quiet Afternoon) and Sausage Series, digital slide works including Airports and Flowers and Mushrooms, stills from the film The Way Things Go, and the artists' polyurethane installation The Objects for Glenstone. It also documents Questions, a slide installation of more than 400 handwritten existential queries that won the Golden Lion at the 2003 Venice Biennale. Contributions come from Boris Groys, Mark Godfrey, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Brian O'Doherty.
Fischli (born 1952) and Weiss (1946-2012) worked together in Zurich from 1979 until Weiss's death, transforming ordinary materials and everyday subjects into deadpan, often absurdist works. Their film The Way Things Go (1987) traces a thirty-minute chain reaction of tires, balloons, and household objects and later inspired Honda's "Cog" commercial. Their other exhibitions include a 1996 retrospective organized by the Walker Art Center and a 2006 retrospective at Tate Modern.
