London/Wales
London/Wales pairs two series of photographs by Robert Frank of postwar Britain: one of London bankers, workers and children, the other of Welsh coal miners and their families.
Philip Brookman edited the book. Steidl lists it at 128 pages, cloth-bound, with English text, in a first edition of March 2007 and a second of May 2018. A note by Frank on Steidl's page says that London struck him as black, white and gray, that a Welshman told him about the miners there, and that he had read Richard Llewellyn's So grün war mein Tal. The Wales pictures came out of that, and he calls them his only attempt at telling a "story". Steidl presents the book as a forerunner of The Americans.
Frank (1924–2019) was born in Zurich and moved to the United States in 1947. He is best known for The Americans, first published in English in 1959, and for the film Pull My Daisy of the same year. Steidl has published over 30 of his books.
