What We Have Seen
What We Have Seen (Was haben wir gesehen) is one of Robert Frank's visual diaries from late in his career, built around memory and old photographs.
Steidl published it in February 2016 as a 48-page book in a slipcase. It begins and ends on a close view of a clock tower's dial. Pictures of older photographs recur, and so does the word "souvenir", seen under a magnifying glass resting on a page of French text. Frank's house in Mabou appears again, and Steidl says it was a popular retreat for people including Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs.
Frank (1924–2019) was born in Zurich and moved to the United States in 1947. He is best known for The Americans, first published in English in 1959. Steidl dates his visual diaries to 2010–17 and counts them as an important part of his later work.
