Fingerprint
Fingerprint is a box of 45 loose facsimile Polaroids from Jim Goldberg's Raised by Wolves, the long project on runaway teenagers in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Stanley/Barker published the set in 2021. The Polaroids come from the project's working material: drafts for photographs Goldberg made later, and gifts he gave to the teenagers themselves. Some carry writing on the image about who the kids are and what they face, and others catch quieter moments on the street. The silkscreened box measures 120 x 150 mm. Raised by Wolves covers the late 1980s and early 1990s and combines photographs, text, films and installations. Goldberg's own site lists home-movie stills, snapshots, drawings and diary entries among its materials, and names Tweeky Dave and Echo as the two runaways the book follows most closely.
Goldberg describes his work as long-term collaboration with people outside the mainstream, examining American myths of class, power and happiness. He joined Magnum Photos in 2002 and is Professor Emeritus at the California College of the Arts. His awards include three National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Henri Cartier-Bresson Award and the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. Later books include Ruby Every Fall (Nazraeli Press, 2014), Candy (Yale University Press, 2017) and Darrell & Patricia (Pier 24 Photography, 2018).
