Raised By Wolves
"Raised by Wolves" is Jim Goldberg's decade-long documentary project on runaway and homeless teenagers in San Francisco and Los Angeles. It pairs his photographs with the subjects' own handwritten words rather than captions supplied by the photographer.
The book centers on Tweeky Dave and Echo, two runaways whose lives became intertwined over the years Goldberg followed them. A wider cast of young people living on the street fills out the project. Goldberg lets his subjects annotate and respond to his pictures directly, giving equal weight to their personalities, histories, and dreams rather than presenting them only as subjects of pity. Scalo published this first edition, a large-format paperback, in 1995. It accompanied a traveling exhibition organized with Philip Brookman that opened at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and ran through 1998 at venues including the Addison Gallery of American Art, the Zurich Museum of Design, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The book runs 315 pages with color and black-and-white illustrations.
Goldberg, born in 1953, built the project over ten years. He went on to publish other book-length documentary projects, among them "Hospice: A Photographic Inquiry" (1996) and "Open See" (2009).
