Cutting Edges: Contemporary Collage by Robert Klanten

Cutting Edges: Contemporary Collage

by Robert Klanten
Gestalten · 2011 · Hardcover

Cutting Edges surveys the early-2010s resurgence of collage as a contemporary art and design practice, gathering the work of dozens of international artists and illustrators who cut, layer, and reassemble found photographs, prints, and ephemera into new compositions.

Published by Gestalten in Berlin in 2011 and edited by Robert Klanten, Hendrik Hellige, and James Gallagher, the 215-page hardcover volume opens with an essay tracing collage's roots in Dada, Surrealism, and Constructivism, the movements that established the technique through artists such as Hannah Höch, John Heartfield, and El Lissitzky, before turning to full-color spreads of contemporary work. Most pieces are made by hand from cut paper and found material rather than digital montage, with several contributors treating the omission of source imagery as deliberately as its addition.

Klanten, Gestalten's founder, has shaped numerous surveys of contemporary visual culture for the publisher, with Hellige co-editing alongside him. James Gallagher, who also wrote the preface, is a New York collage artist trained at the School of Visual Arts he has since curated international collage exhibitions and, in 2013, founded the art magazine Secret Behavior. Cutting Edges arrived early in a broader wave of surveys cataloguing collage's parallel analog and digital revival.

Notes

Gestalten's own product page for this 2011 title is gone (404 no Wayback snapshot found under /products/cutting-edges or /en/cutting-edges), so bibliographic data was confirmed via the Library of Congress MARC record (lccn.loc.gov/2011430334) cross-checked against OpenLibrary and three distributor listings, all in full agreement on ISBN, page count (215 p.), and the three-editor credit (Klanten, Hellige, Gallagher LOC MARC field 700 lists all three with role 'edt', no single principal editor distinguished). Cover image is a clean but slightly 3/4-angled product photograph (spine visible) sourced via AbeBooks/Amazon stock imagery no flat, straight-on front-cover shot could be located (Gestalten's own site and Pallant Bookshop's image both blocked automated fetch). Depth (2.5 cm) and weight (1600 g) are approximate, converted from a dealer's imperial listing (12 x 9.5 x 1 in, 3.5 lb) rather than a primary bibliographic source. Checked whether this title is explicitly framed as the first entry in Gestalten's later 'Age of Collage' series the Age of Collage product page cross-references 'Cutting Edges' only in its SEO keyword metadata, not in visible body text, so the claim is not confirmed and was omitted from the description per instructions. Subjects (LOC): Collage -- 21st century.
