Believe + Doubt
"Believe + Doubt" is the catalogue for Barbara Kruger's first major institutional solo exhibition in Austria, held across three floors of the Kunsthaus Bregenz.
The exhibition, curated by museum director Yilmaz Dziewior, was designed by Kruger specifically for the building and combined her photocollages from the 1980s with a four-channel video installation and wall-scale text pieces confronting the viewer directly. The hardcover catalogue, edited by Dziewior and published by Kunsthaus Bregenz, documents the installation floor by floor.
Kruger has had large-scale solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and represented the United States at the 51st Venice Biennale, where she won the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement in 2005; the Bregenz show was, notably, her first major solo presentation in Austria despite that record.
