Index
Index is a 1,200-page paperback of Christian Marclay's black-and-white photocopies, drawn from the source material behind his recent work.
Edition Patrick Frey describes the high-contrast Xeroxes as early experiments toward finished pieces and as a view into Marclay's process. Marclay is quoted on the method: he cuts and pastes and uses “my photocopier as a quick way to experiment and develop ideas.” Laurent Benner, who has designed other books and record covers with Marclay, designed the book. Edition Patrick Frey of Zürich issued the first edition in 2021, in English, with 600 black-and-white images on pages of 29.7 by 21 centimetres.
Marclay was born in San Rafael, California, in 1955, and for nearly forty years has worked on the connections between vision and sound. The Clock won him the Golden Lion at the 54th Venice Biennale. His solo presentations include the Hirshhorn (1990), Kunsthaus Zürich (1997), the Whitney (2010) and the Centre Pompidou (2022), and his work is held by MoMA, Tate and the Centre Pompidou, among others.
