To Be Continued
To Be Continued is an artist's book by Christian Marclay built entirely from collaged fragments of comic books, with each page functioning as a graphic score to be read and played aloud.
Published by Klangspuren Schwaz in 2016 in an edition of 2,000, the 48-page stapled softcover assembles panels of comic-book figures caught mid-shout, mid-scream, or mid-noise into a sequence that musicians can interpret for guitar, woodwinds, double bass, and percussion, with each page allotted roughly thirty seconds. It was conceived for Ensemble baBel, with whom Marclay has collaborated since 2012, and premiered at Klangspuren Schwaz in September 2016 in a version for the group.
Marclay (b. 1955) has worked at the intersection of sound and visual art since the early 1980s, turning records, comics, and photographs into instruments and scores; To Be Continued extends the line of graphic-score works that let performers translate images directly into sound.
