Roma Publications · 2017 · Softcover

Motion is the book made for Karel Martens’s exhibition of the same name at Kunstverein München, built mostly from his video work.

It is the seventh issue in the Companion series that the Kunstverein and Roma Publications produce together. Martens and Julie Peeters edited it, and Peeters designed it. Most of the content comes from the video Not for Resale, a sequence of photographs of Martens’s studio wall at Hoog Keppel, made in 2000. Two later videos, Lost & Found (2004) and Tol (2008), are also in the book. It closes with a transcribed conversation between Martens and the Kunstverein director Chris Fitzpatrick and an afterword, in English and German.

Martens is a Dutch artist, graphic designer and educator. In 1998 he and Wigger Bierma founded the Werkplaats Typografie, a two-year graphic design masters programme that is part of ArtEZ University of the Arts.
