Way Far by Ryan McGinley

Way Far

by Ryan McGinley
Rizzoli · 2015

Way Far collects photographs Ryan McGinley made on a series of road trips across the American West. It extends the loose, sun-struck vision of youth and landscape that runs through his earlier work.

Rizzoli published the book in 2015. It follows a small cast of models through deserts, caves, and open country, moving between staged nude studies and looser shots of the trip itself. McGinley shot much of the material at night and at magic hour, using long exposures and flash to give the pictures a theatrical, otherworldly cast rather than a documentary one.

McGinley built his reputation on skateboarding-scene snapshots and the nomadic group portraits of Moonmilk and The Kids Were Alright. Way Far continues that arc toward a more ambitious, cinematic treatment of the same themes: youth, freedom, and the body set against the American landscape.
