All Systems Fail

All Systems Fail is the first book to treat Sarah Morris's paintings and films as one practice rather than two, tracking how the gridded surfaces of corporate glass and the moving image feed each other in an art of urban psychology.

Published by Hatje Cantz in 2023 and edited by Dirk Luckow, the 320-page bilingual German and English volume carries 508 illustrations across more than fifty paintings, documentation of the installations, drawings, film posters and sculpture, and Morris's complete cinematic output. New essays by Bettina Funcke and Asad Raza are joined by an interview with Christopher Bollen; the design is by Scott King and Tom Etherington. It accompanied the retrospective of the same name at Deichtorhallen Hamburg, organised with the Kunstmuseen Krefeld, the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern and the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, which brought together over 180 works.

Morris (b. 1967, Sevenoaks) lives and works in New York. Since the late 1990s she has built a body of high-gloss household-paint abstractions keyed to specific cities and power structures, running in parallel with films including Midtown, Capital, Los Angeles, Beijing, Rio and Finite and Infinite Games.
