Sarah Morris

The catalog for the British-American artist Sarah Morris's (b. 1967) solo exhibition at EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art (June 21, 2017 – January 7, 2018), documenting the abstract paintings and films of an artist who treats the two media as one continuous practice.

The exhibition brought together three of Morris's films, a selection of her graphic, hard-color paintings, and Mäntyjä (Pines), a 30-meter site-specific wall painting created for EMMA's Aalto-influenced Tapiola setting. Since the mid-1990s Morris has traced the tension between social space, identity, and power, reading cities (Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Beijing) through their architectures, logos, and systems of control. The 175-page hardcover, edited by museum director Pilvi Kalhama with Ari Karttunen, Milla Rissanen, and Pernilla Wiik, includes color illustrations throughout and, unusually, music notation. Published by EMMA in 2019.

Morris lives and works in New York her paintings and films are held by MoMA, Tate, and the Centre Pompidou, and she is represented by White Cube, Capitain Petzel, and Air de Paris.
