Violent Images
An anthology of essays, interviews and visual works on how images depict violence and how they exert it, edited by the photographer Eva Leitolf and the designer Giulia Cordin.
The book starts from current cases: AI imagery that mimics war photography from Gaza, the Abu Ghraib snapshots recirculating as memes, surveillance built on automated image analysis, sexist pictures in advertising. It asks where the violence of an image begins, whether in what it shows or in how it is made, distributed and used, and who decides. Roland Bleiker and Emma Hutchison write on gender and violence in news photography, and Stephanie Polsky on the whiteness of Silicon Valley's digital ecologies. Further texts and interviews come from Monica M. Haller, Max Pinckers, Mark T. Reinhardt, Elisa Mailänder, Lisa Bogerts and Maik Fielitz, and Lorenzo Gabrielli and Amarela Varela-Huerta. The visual works include pieces by Lorna Simpson, Broomberg & Chanarin, Sammy Baloji, Jenny Holzer, Bouchra Khalili, Laia Abril, Kiluanji Kia Henda and Valie Export.
This is the third volume of Negotiating Images, after Shoot & Think (unibz) and Landscape with(out) Locus (NERO). Leitolf and Cordin work together as Studio Image at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. Leitolf is known for German Images and Postcards from Europe, long-running photographic studies of racist violence and of Europe's borders.
