Published by Fulton Ryder in February 2025, this 96-page hardcover artist's book documents Richard Prince's 1-2-3-4 series begun around 2008.
The work sequences found photographic portraits into simple numerical headcounts: one person, two people, three people, four people. Prince applies this system to images of musicians, actors, celebrities, and anonymous subjects, transforming them into 'performing acts: solo artist, duo, trio, quartet.' The numbering concept references punk-rock count-ins (1-2-3-4!) while incorporating jersey-number aesthetics from sports culture.
The project connects to Prince's Instagram handle @richardprince1234 and demonstrates his continued interest in seriality, appropriation, and the transformation of found imagery through systematic recontextualization. The 80 color images document this cheekily compounding approach to group portraiture.
