Prince's Cowboys series, initiated in the 1980s, appropriates Marlboro cigarette advertisements to create iconic images of American mythology and masculinity. This catalog presents enlarged inkjet prints transferred to canvas and overpainted with techniques reminiscent of postwar American art movements. James Frey's essay 'Belly Through the Brush' offers a literary response to Prince's exploration of how mass media manipulates desire and constructs identity. The publication documents Prince's most recognizable and influential series.
