Folk Songs

Published by Gagosian in 2026 to accompany the show at 555 West 24th Street (November 6–December 20, 2025), the book documents handmade paintings, drawings, and collages made between 2018 and 2023 together with five sculptures dating from 2007 to 2025, reproduced in color plates and installation views. An essay by the art historian Sydney Stutterheim reads Prince's recurring methods (self-reference and appropriation, buried meanings and apocrypha) against a palette of soft pinks, magentas, and reds set against black. Designed by Graphic Thought Facility, London, and printed by Pureprint.
Richard Prince (b. 1949) is among the central figures of the Pictures Generation, whose rephotographed Marlboro Cowboys, Nurse paintings, joke canvases, and Instagram New Portraits made appropriation a defining strategy of postwar art. His work is held by the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney, the Guggenheim, and Tate Folk Songs extends the looser, hand-made register of his recent painting.
