The Fug

Published for Prince’s 2011 exhibition at Almine Rech Brussels, this substantial catalogue presents a montage of Prince’s engagement with peripheral aspects of American culture.

The publication features "Thirteen Different Ways of Looking at Richard Prince," an essay by John McWhinnie that gives critical context for Prince’s appropriation strategies and his excavation of vernacular imagery. The book accompanied the exhibition "The Fug," shown at Almine Rech Brussels from September 10 to November 5, 2011.

Prince, born in 1949 in the Panama Canal Zone, creates art exploring "peripheral aspects of American culture, both high and low." His work addresses subjects like jokes, vehicles, literature, and celebrity while "taking aim at the vulgar, revealing culture’s indiscretions—misogyny, consumerism, exhibitionism and idealized desire."
