Why I Go to the Movies Alone
Tanam Press
· 1983
Why I Go to the Movies Alone is Richard Prince's only book of fiction, published by Tanam Press, New York, in 1983 and later reissued by Barbara Gladstone Gallery in 1995.
The volume gathers short, interrelated texts set in an urban world where characters construct images of one another, arranged in three sections: "Cowboys," "Mountains," and "Sunsets." The scenes are linked by tone and recurring voice rather than by plot. The book has since been cited in Artist/Author: Contemporary Artists' Books (Distributed Art Publishers/American Federation of Arts, 1998) and in Bibliothèque d'un Amateur: Richard Prince's Publications 1981–2014 (Christophe Daviet-Théry / VIAINDUSTRIAE, 2014).
